Lives and works in Washington, DC
I received my degree in illustration from the University of Delaware where I worked predominantly in printmaking. Since then, I have continued to study various printmaking techniques and have gravitated specifically toward relief carving methods. Most recently I have begun to include sculptural media, such as wood, concrete, and glass in my work.
To broaden my art practice, I work at the Washington Glass School, and regularly serve as an assistant teacher there. This allows me to both develop new skills working with sculptural glass as well as to solidify skills in my preferred techniques. I greatly value this experience, and was recently invited to teach a class in the spring of 2011 that will highlight my own method of creating glass prints.
Creating art has pushed me to better formulate and express my thoughts and opinions about life and relationships. Each piece provides a unique path for this self-exploration. I connect with printmaking, as its methods and tools have remained mostly unchanged throughout history and therefore provide a tangible link to the past.
In 2003 I was chosen by the Cultural Development Corporation to receive a permanent live/work space in the Mather Studios in downtown DC and one year later was juried in as a member of the Washington Printmakers Gallery. Since then, I have received multiple artist grants through the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities (DCCAH). In 2004 I was named as a top ten pick of Gallery Neptune at Artomatic and in 2007 I received the first ever Encouragement Award from Habatat Gallery. I was invited to have a solo exhibition at the Northern Virginia Community College Waddell Gallery in 2010 and was again selected for a solo exhibition in 2011 at Glenview Mansion Gallery in Rockville, Maryland.
My most current body of work “Untold Fables” includes scenes from imagined fables. Most simply put: illustrations to unknown stories. With this series, I create my own stories and meanings, but aim to leave plenty of room for interpretation. I am continually fascinated by the variety of interpretations conveyed to me, and I fully encourage viewers to invent and share their own storylines.
